Join Team Activate and be a champion for native wildlife across Dunedin.

City Sanctuary and Predator Free Dunedin are part of the nation-wide challenge to achieve a Predator Free New Zealand by 2050.

Our vision is to create a vibrant City Sanctuary for Dunedin where wildlife thrives, and communities are leading city-wide predator control.

Over the next three years, we are helping 1 in 10 households across 13 priority suburbs protect native wildlife in their backyards through predator trapping.

We need a team of passionate people to help residents get activated!

Activity location/workplace

The City Sanctuary area spans more than 8,000 hectares from North East Valley to South Dunedin, along to Brighton and up to Chain Hills.

Over the next three years, we are actively supporting the following priority suburbs: Balmacewen, Caversham, Dalmore, Glenleith, Helensburgh, Liberton, Maori Hill, North East Valley, North Dunedin, Opoho, Pine Hill and Woodhaugh. Our key focus over the next 6 months will be Maori Hill.

Our office is at Verger's Cottage which is tucked between the Town Hall and Cathedral on Moray Place.

Time commitment

We are a flexible team and want to make sure any volunteer opportunity will work for you. This means you can choose how much time you are able to give. Ideally, members of Team Activate would contribute 2 - 5 hours per week over the next six months but we know this will vary depending on what you have on!.

Activities

Team Activate will do a range of activities throughout the year.

We need to spread the word and activate people living in Maori Hill to start trapping. This may involve distributing flyers to residents and spreading the word through social media posts, storytelling and face-to-face chats.

If you're keen to learn more about backyard trapping, we are also getting traps ready for distribution and helping residents with their own efforts!

Skills required

There are no specific skills required for this role other than having a passion for protecting New Zealand's native wildlife and great people skills. Being a great community (e.g. happy to yarn with someone you have never met) is a bonus too!

Equipment provided

We will provide all the support, resources and training you need to feel confident and comfortable doing a great job.

You will need to make your own way to the office or locations where we are doing engagement work (but we will ride share when possible).

We will keep a record of your volunteer contributions to ensure you can showcase your efforts on future job applications or your resumé!

How to apply

Send an email to the City Sanctuary team (info@citysanctuary.nz) to discuss how you can get involved.
